PAST EVENTS
Events in the history of Barnet trades council since re-establishment in 2007.
10 November 2007: Fremantle care workers' march and public meeting in Burnt Oak. After the meeting some local trade unionists discuss re-establishing Barnet trades council.
22 April 2008: the new trades council holds its first general meeting in Hendon Town Hall. It hears speakers from the Fremantle care workers' dispute, Hope Not Hate campaign, PCS and RMT unions, and the Greater London Association of TUCs; and elects the executive.
24 September 2008: trades council stages public launch night with film director Ken Loach introducing his 2007 film "It's a Free World" (Sixteen Films), Lango Gamanga speaks about the Fremantle dispute, and John Burgess, Barnet Unison branch secretary, informs the meeting about the council's Future Shape plans.
11 November 2008: 300 Barnet residents and council workers attend a public meeting organised by council unions and the trades council at North London Business Park. They learn about the council's Future Shape plans and discuss the unions' response to them.
3 December 2008: 400 Barnet residents and council workers attend rally outside Barnet House organised by council unions and the trades council. Afterwards, they pack into Barnet House to witness the council Cabinet rubber-stamp the Future Shape report.
9 December 2008: London trades councils Christmas party organised by Barnet trades council and sponsored by Waltham Forest trades council. |
